About the protected area

  • Total Area:8.3 km²

The Parque Estadual Ilha Anchieta protects the second largest island on the state's Litoral Norte. It has 17 km of rocky shores and seven beaches with crystal-clear waters that contrast with the green of the Atlantic Forest. Created in 1977, the Park has the following objectives: the protection and conservation of natural ecosystems; the development of scientific research; and the carrying out of environmental education and recreation activities in contact with nature. The main ecosystems in the Park are marine, dense ombrophilous forest, restinga and rocky-shore vegetation. Tourists can enjoy nature walks, dive in clear waters, explore a rich historical and cultural heritage or simply take in the scenery. There is a great variety of reptile and amphibian species, and the park has more than 50 bird species, such as thrushes, doves, manakins, Brazilian tanagers, tanagers and gulls. In addition, land species were introduced, such as capybaras, pacas, agoutis, monkeys, armadillos, coatis, opossums and lizards.
