Parque Estadual Nascentes do Paranapanema - PENAP protects one of the most important remnants of Atlantic Forest, home to approximately 1,000 springs that form the Paranapanema River, one of the state's main rivers in terms of power generation and water supply, as well as important historical sites (the "encanados") dating back to the period of alluvial gold mining in the 18th century, which are among the main cultural heritage sites of the Alto Paranapanema region.
