Parque Estadual Pedra Azul

About the protected area

  • Total Area:13 km²

Pedra Azul, at 1,822 meters above sea level, together with Pedra das Flores (1,909 m) and Pedra do Lagarto, make up a granite rock complex that is one of the state's postcard views. The name comes from the lichens that give the rock bluish tones, but depending on the light it can show colors ranging from orange to pink. Part of Parque Estadual da Pedra Azul, created in 1991, the area was first declared a forest reserve in 1960. The park is home to many plant species, such as orchids, bromeliads and ipê trees, as well as animals such as armadillos, deer, tayras and even threatened species such as the puma and the southern tamandua. Very popular in winter, the park has a limit of 150 people per day on the trails, ensuring a safe experience while preserving nature and the infrastructure.
