Parque Municipal do Atalaia

About the protected area

  • Total Area:235 km²

A very warm welcome back to Parque Municipal Natural Atalaia! One of the region's greatest environmental assets, Parque Atalaia is also very important to the history and health of the people of Macaé. Acquired by the government back in the 19th century, it was the city's first source of drinking water, easing the suffering of Macaé's population, which was plagued by diseases carried by untreated water. When you visit Parque Atalaia, you learn more about this history and about the lush Atlantic Forest, with its extremely rich biodiversity. In its 235 hectares and the surrounding area, nearly 200 tree species have been recorded, along with dozens more species of shrubs and epiphytes. As for wildlife, nearly 40 species of fish live in the area's streams, along with 250 bird species and more than 60 species of small, medium, and large mammals, including endemic and endangered species.
