Parque Nacional da Furna Feia
About the protected area
- Total Area:85.2 km²
Furna Feia National Park is named after its main cave, which is so named due to its darkness and depth, as well as the presence of animals such as bats, spiders, and owls. It is an important site for the protection of the remnants of the Caatinga, and the park also houses around 200 caves within and around it. The visitor infrastructure is still under development, allowing only educational tourism and research activities. This is due to the fragility of the caves, which are essential for the ecosystem, and the existing rock paintings, requiring careful planning and infrastructure for visitation. The park also has a reforestation program, with the help of local cement industries, as a form of environmental compensation.
