Parque Nacional do Araguaia

About the protected area

  • Total Area:5,555 km²

Araguaia comes from Tupi and means "river of the valley of the parrots". The park entirely overlaps Indigenous territories, protecting the transition ecosystems between the Cerrado and the Amazon, especially aquatic nurseries and the abundant birdlife. Authorization is required to visit the park because of the Javaé Indigenous land. It rains heavily between December and April, which is also mosquito season. Beaches form between September and November, which is also when turtles lay their eggs and the eggs hatch, and the best time to see the very rich land wildlife of Parque Nacional do Araguaia.
