Parque Nacional do Pau Brasil

About the protected area

  • Total Area:18,936 km²

Pau Brasil National Park was created on April 20, 1999, in celebration of Brazil's 500 years, covering approximately 19,000 hectares. It is one of the most important protected areas of the Atlantic Forest in southern Bahia, located entirely within the municipality of Porto Seguro. It has world recognition status. The region where it is located, known as the Costa do Descobrimento, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its exceptional value from the perspective of science and the preservation of ecosystems of universal interest. The name Costa do Descobrimento refers to the fact that it was here that, on April 22, 1500, the Portuguese first landed on the Brazilian coast. Thus, this region contains various testimonies of the beginning of Brazil's occupation, whether through prehistoric and historical archaeological sites, the remnants of Jesuit villages (Vale Verde, the former Jesuit reduction of Patatiba dos Anjos, and Trancoso), or urban centers with many examples of colonial architecture and historic buildings. Visiting the Park guarantees pure air, a mild climate, stunning views, and harmony with nature. Come and explore!
