Reserva de Desenvolvimento Sustentável do Aventureiro
About the protected area
- Total Area:19 km²
The Aventureiro Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS) is a fundamental conservation unit for understanding the balance between environmental preservation and the presence of traditional populations on Ilha Grande. It was created by State Law No. 6,793, on May 28, 2014, to preserve the caiçara culture and ensure that this traditional Aventureiro community can remain in its ancestral territory, which has existed long before the creation of the surrounding protected areas. The RDS also promotes and works for the Sustainable Use of the region, allowing, developing, and caring for the exploration of natural resources (such as artisanal fishing) and community-based tourism, as long as these activities are conducted in a balanced manner and maintain the integrity of the Atlantic Forest and marine ecosystems. It consists of a terrestrial portion, contiguous to the Rebio da Praia do Sul, and a marine portion (which was the former Aventureiro State Marine Park). The jewel of the reserve is the Vila do Aventureiro and its beach, famous for the "lying coconut tree," being one of the most isolated points on the island. Due to environmental fragility, the number of visitors is controlled, and there is a limit on the number of people who can stay overnight in the region. This control is carried out by Inea RJ, through the management of the conservation unit, with support from TurisAngra. There are no hotels on Praia do Aventureiro. Accommodation is exclusively in authorized campsites managed by local residents, with oversight from the RDS management. There is no conventional electricity (only generators and solar panels). Biodiversity Protection: Maintain the integrity of the Atlantic Forest and marine ecosystems.
