Território Quilombola do América

About the protected area

  • Total Area:1,069 km²

The Quilombo do América community identifies as descendants of quilombolas, preserving traditional cultural practices such as cultivating cassava and producing flour. These activities are carried out within a specific social context, in the community's territory. The community's cultural identity is influenced by the Américo Pinheiro School, soccer games on the local field, church services, and activities at the community center, which serve as moments of gathering and integration for the population. The community has undergone significant transformations over the years. Initially consisting of only a few houses, it is now a more developed area, although the land is still mostly kept within families, strengthening community ties. The origin of Quilombo do América is linked to a shipwreck that occurred on Ajuruteua beach. According to accounts, a ship carrying enslaved people fleeing from Maranhão ran aground on the beach. Some of these people, including Américo Pinheiro, settled in the region, starting the community. This event is considered a forced migratory process of the black population and is an important part of the oral history passed down through generations. Américo Pinheiro de Brito, one of the first residents, is a central figure in this narrative, symbolizing the resistance and continuity of the quilombola community in the Bragantina Region.
