Heliotrope Ridge
About the trail
- Difficulty:
Moderate - Extension:8.6 km
The Heliotrope Ridge Trail is one of the most beautiful routes on Mount Baker, passing through stretches of dense forest, open fields, and snowy areas, culminating in a privileged view of the Coleman Glacier, one of the largest and most accessible glaciers of the volcano. The end of the trail offers different viewpoints of the glacier, where it is possible to see the ice crevasses, the waterfalls formed by melting, and the characteristic glacial environment of the region. As you hike, the landscape gradually opens up, revealing Mount Baker, its glaciers, streams fed by melting snow, and rock formations shaped by glacial action. During the summer, the vegetation bursts into color with the blooming of flowers in the open fields. The proximity to the glacier and the grandeur of Mount Baker make this one of the most iconic trails in the northern part of Washington state. The trail can be comfortably completed in a day, but there are also options for overnight camping in two areas: Harrisson Camp, which is better sheltered in the forest, and Hogsback Camp, located higher up in an open area.
