Saltos do Rio Preto
About the trail
- Difficulty:
Moderate - Extension:9.14 km
The waterfalls of the Rio Preto, also known as "Saltos do Garimpão," are the most visited trail in the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park. Salto II has a drop of about 120 meters, which can only be viewed from above, from a viewpoint that shows part of the Rio Preto Valley. Above Salto II is Salto I, a waterfall with a drop of about 80 meters, featuring a large number of rocks, where the Rio Preto forms a huge natural pool. During the first section, the trail passes by Garimpão, considered the largest quartz crystal mining site in the region when it was active (1912 to 1961), with holes and exposed blocks of crystals. Additionally, the trail offers views of palm swamps and the Mirante das Dróseras, an endemic carnivorous plant, from where there is a privileged view of the Serra de Santana. Recently, nighttime visitation was inaugurated on the Saltos trail. Entry to this trail is done by purchasing a ticket on-site or through the Parquetur website. Photos: Vicente Leal E. Fernandez
