About the trail
- Difficulty:
Moderate - Extension:11 km
The Sapateiro Mountain, with its 846 meters of altitude, on the left bank of the Paraiba do Sul River, formed by an immense stone wall and unique beauty, impresses those who pass by. It is mostly located in the Municipality of São Fidélis-RJ, bordering at the summit with the Municipalities of Cardoso Moreira-RJ and Italva-RJ, showcasing beautiful landscapes, such as the sunrise and the city of Campos dos Goytacazes. Among other tales, legend has it that at the foot of the mountain lived a man who repaired shoes, and nearby lived the Puris Indians, who would kill and eat their victims. One day, they attacked the shoemaker, whose name was never discovered, and killed his entire family, except for his daughter of rare beauty, named Joana, who was kidnapped. As she was unhappy living with the Indians, she escaped and ended up in Vila São Salvador (now Campos dos Goytacazes), where she was found by a wealthy farmer who was captivated by her beauty and soon took her to his lands, on top of another mountain known as "Serra da Bela Joana."
