Trilha das Antas

About the trail

  • Difficulty:Moderate
  • Extension:2.3 km

On the Trail of the Tapirs, nature and history meet in every detail. The route crosses an area of muçununga, with sandy, moist soil rich in organic matter. In this unique environment, the presence of the tapir (Tapirus terrestris) stands out, known as the "gardener of the forest" for its essential role in seed dispersal and the regeneration of the Atlantic Forest. At the end of the trail, there is a small reddish pond, a result of the tapirs' actions as they stir the bottom and expose the laterite, rich in oxidized iron. The area plays important ecological roles, such as climate regulation, carbon sequestration, and maintenance of water resources, in addition to having great potential for scientific studies. This was one of the first sections opened for visitation and protection of the Park, reinforcing its historical importance. As you walk here, reflect on the stories you are building today and how they can contribute to the preservation of this natural heritage for future generations.
