About the protected area

  • Total Area:63.7 km²

The Metrópole da Amazônia Wildlife Refuge (REVIS) is a conservation unit under full protection located in the Metropolitan Region of Belém (RMB), 23 km from Belém, the capital of the state of Pará. Established in 2010, the REVIS covers an area of 63.67 km², representing 6.3% of the total area of four municipalities: Ananindeua, Benevides, Marituba, and Santa Isabel do Pará. The primary objective of this conservation unit is to protect natural environments, ensuring the conditions necessary for the existence and reproduction of both resident and migratory species and communities of flora and fauna. In addition to contributing to the maintenance of environmental services and ensuring natural ecological processes, the Wildlife Refuge is also dedicated to conserving the 31% of remaining primary forests in the RMB. The area also houses impressive aquatic, upland, and floodplain ecosystems, establishing itself as a fundamental pillar for environmental conservation in the state. Visitors of the Refuge can be captivated by the rich combination of natural and tourist attractions. Highlights include the Onça Lake, the Dique Stream, and a diverse fauna with an abundance of squirrel monkeys, agoutis, brocket deer, armadillos, and capybaras. The region is a true sanctuary for a variety of amphibians and reptiles, offering a spectacular display of biodiversity that fascinates all nature enthusiasts. Research conducted in this conservation unit reveals the presence of several endangered plant species, such as acapu, angelim, cedar, Brazil nut tree, and white ucuúba. In the floodplain areas of the Guamá and Uriboca Rivers, visitors can observe impressive specimens of samaúmas and ucuúbas, enriching their experience even further. Discover the natural landscapes of the Wildlife Refuge, with its rivers, estuaries, and streams, and embark on adventures along the Seringueira, Samambaia, and Pirelli Circuit trails. These trails are available for walking or cycling and offer a wide variety of environments, passing through open areas and dense vegetation, each with different levels of difficulty. Include in your itinerary places that preserve the history of the Refuge and the culture of the state. Explore old buildings, such as the remains of sugar mills and the old Pirelli Farm, and discover the tradition of latex extraction. Also, visit the Dique Village, remnants of the Guamá Farm, and the traditional communities of Ponta Negra and Santo Amaro, located within the conservation unit. Additional Information To visit the Metrópole da Amazônia Wildlife Refuge, you must obtain authorization from the managing body, Ideflor-Bio.
